Feather Client Patch
Feather got acquired and its launcher started turning itself into “Dawn”. This keeps an existing install as Feather, and switches the ads off while it's in there.
[01] why
No off switch, so I made one
Feather Client was acquired, and its launcher began replacing itself with a new client called Dawn. If you liked Feather the way it was, there was no setting to stop it.
[02] what it changes
The patch
- blocksthe auto-update to Dawn
- removesthe ad bar and ad panel
- enablesDevTools (Ctrl+Shift+I)
- turns offthe asar integrity check, so the patched launcher loads
[03] careful by design
It tries hard not to break anything
- Every edit is the same length and made in place, in files you already have. Nothing is downloaded.
- No admin rights needed.
- Safe to run twice. It spots what's already patched.
- If it doesn't recognise your Feather version, it stops without touching anything.
- It backs up the originals first, so undoing it is two file renames.
[04] already on dawn?
There might be a way back
Feather's updater sometimes leaves the old Feather installer behind in %LOCALAPPDATA%\feather-updater. Reinstall from that, run the patch before opening the launcher, and you're back.
[05] the trade-off
What it costs you
Updates are off on purpose, because that's what stops Dawn. The price is that Feather stays on its current Minecraft version.
